The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of a woman, who tragically lost her life in this morning’s devastating N3 crash near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza. We also wish those who were injured a full and speedy recovery.

According to reports, a truck travelling towards Durban allegedly lost control, collided with several vehicles, crossed the median and struck vehicles on the opposite carriageway before leaving the road. The collision claimed the life of the woman – believed to be in her thirties – while three other drivers sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to hospital for further treatment.

The DA commends the swift response of emergency personnel, paramedics, law enforcement officers and all first responders who attended to the scene under extremely challenging circumstances.

This heartbreaking incident serves as another reminder of the urgent need for stronger road safety measures, particularly on major freight corridors such as the N3. The DA believes that rigorous enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness standards, regular inspections of heavy-duty vehicles, improved traffic monitoring and stricter action against negligent operators are essential in reducing preventable accidents.

As a partner within KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) we call on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this crash and to ensure accountability where necessary. The people of KZN deserve clear answers, while every effort must be made to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
