The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has learnt that more than a week following a mass shooting in eNsimbini, Mayville that left five people dead and seven injured, no arrests have been made.
We have since written to KZN Police Commissioner, Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, to request that this case is treated with the urgency that it deserves. It cannot be business as usual when members of the community are killed in this manner.
According to reports, three gunmen entered a tavern in which the unsuspecting victims had been watching a soccer match and demanded valuables. After victims had failed to provide these, they were shot dead.
January to March 2026 crime statistics indicate that KZN has a murder rate of 8.8 per 100 000 people for the quarter, is number two in the country for murders with the top three stations having recorded most cases for attempted murder.
The economy is compromised when our communities have become breeding grounds for criminals. In a province reeling with murders, crime cannot be an item it is the agenda.
The DA will this week visit some of the families that were affected to offer our condolences and support.
Our communities deserve to live free from fear.
