7 days later: ANC leadership and Public Order Police fail to act on uMngeni protests

The Democratic Alliance in the Mooi-uMngeni Constituency is outraged by the lack of action by Public Order Police from Pietermaritzburg as well as the ANC leaders in KwaZulu-Natal as the uMngeni municipality has once again been shut down.

In any other situation, Public Order Policing would have quickly dispersed the crowds and allowed service delivery to continue. Why are these protestors being treated differently to other protesters who have been protesting for their livelihoods?

The Democratic Alliance has today again implored the ANC Provincial Chairperson, Sihle Zikalala, to get control over his members. ANC members and supporters have now entered the 7th day of blocking the entrance of the uMngeni Municipality and stopping service delivery.

Sihle Zikalala and the ANC leadership have promised to get tough on corruption, mismanagement and ill-discipline in their organisation. How is it possible to take this statement seriously when they cannot control a dozen of their members who are disrupting services for thousands of uMngeni residents? It is quite clear that Sihle Zikalala and the ANC leaders in KwaZulu-Natal do not hold much power in their organisation if they cannot even get a handle on this situation.

The DA in Mooi-uMngeni Constituency is giving Zikalala until Thursday 5th November to ensure that municipal services are accessible and functioning. Failing this, the DA will approach the National Minster of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs directly because the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal and the government of the province would have confirmed that they have lost control of the situation.
