DA calls for stability and service delivery focus in uMvoti Municipality

13 Oct 2025 in Press Statements

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in uMvoti has noted that the Special Council Meeting scheduled for today, 13 October 2025, which included a motion of no confidence in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, has been halted following a letter from the court directed to the Speaker.

This development is yet another chapter in the ongoing political instability that has gripped uMvoti Local Municipality since the 2021 Local Government Elections. The ongoing power struggle between the ANC, IFP and ABC has now reached the point where court intervention has become necessary to maintain order.

While political parties in the municipality continue to focus on power struggles and internal manoeuvring, residents of uMvoti are the ones who suffer. Roads remain in disrepair, refuse collection is erratic, and water and sanitation services are deteriorating, while unemployment continues to rise.

UMvoti’s governance has become increasingly bleak, marked by poor leadership, lack of accountability and a failure to prioritise service delivery. Instead of focusing on improving infrastructure, restoring financial stability and ensuring reliable services, the Council remains paralysed by political infighting.

As the DA, we will not be drawn into factional battles between the ANC, IFP and ABC. Our sole focus remains on restoring stability, accountability, and service delivery to the residents of uMvoti.

We believe that residents deserve a government that prioritizes their needs, not one consumed by endless power games. The DA will continue to engage constructively in Council, advocate for transparent governance and ensure that public funds are used to improve the lives of all residents.

The residents of uMvoti deserve better, and the DA remains committed to providing that alternative.
