The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johnnes Phungula local municipality (Ubuhlebezwe) strongly condemns the R2.4 million spent on what was essentially an ANC rally, thinly veiled as a name change and rebranding event for the Municipality.
We have written to the Municipal Manager, M.E Mkhize calling for a detailed report on how the R2.4 million was spent.
The DA has consistently opposed the rebranding of Ubuhlebezwe Municipality, as these efforts do not address the real and pressing challenges faced by our residents.
It was no surprise to see the event led by ANC provincial Convener ,Mr Jeff Hadebe, who turned a supposed Municipality celebration into a full-fledged ANC campaign rally. This is the same ANC leadership that is absent when residents desperately call for basic services. Instead of responding to community needs, they choose to grandstand and campaign under the guise of Municipal functions.
Even more concerning was the presence of the District Mayor Honourable Zamo Nxumalo, who has consistently failed to provide reliable water services to our people. Yet, he found the time to participate in what amounted to ANC promotional event, funded by public money.
The DA made a conscious decision not to attend this event, as it represents blatant misuse of municipal funds and disregard for real needs of Ubuhlebezwe residents.
We will continue to hold the ANC accountable for its poor governance and mismanagement, and we remain committed to fighting for a transparent, service-oriented government. The DA will work tirelessly to bring about real change and ensure the ANC voted out in the 2026 elections.
