The Democratic Alliance (DA) are saddened by the news of the tragic passing of five family members in a horrific vehicle accident on the R66 Nyezane in Gingindlovu.

The family members were travelling in a Hyundai grand i10 on their way to Ulundi when the accident occurred.

The DA extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Sadly, the five deceased are family members of DA Councillor Mavis Mdluli.

It is a sad day for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) when five family members are lost in such a tragic way.

The R66 condition is not what it should be, and vehicles have to travel very cautiously. It is riddled with potholes and terrible road surface. Speeding is also a contributing factor and road users are urged to drive with caution along this road.

The DA now demands:

• That KZN’s Transport portfolio committee conducts an oversight inspection of the R66 and;

• That a full report on the status of the R66 be tabled at the next committee meeting, together with a comprehensive plan including budgets and timelines for its full rehabilitation.

Fixing the R66 is not a luxury, it is a lifesaving necessity. Residents can no longer risk their lives on a road that has been allowed to crumble to ruin. As part of KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) the DA will continue to push for proper road networks for the people of the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

The DA calls on the MEC for Human Settlement Honourable MEC Siboniso Duma to ensure that the R66 receives the attention it so desperately needs. It is unacceptable that vehicles are expected to drive such poor roads in KwaZulu-Natal.
