The Democratic Alliance in Msunduzi has noted with absolute dismay the Msunduzi Municipality’s filing of an application for leave to appeal the recent Royal AM court judgment. This decision automatically suspends the original court order, further delaying justice and accountability.
The KwaZulu-Natal High Court, last month, found the awarding of a R27 million sponsorship deal by the ANC-run Msunduzi Municipality to Royal AM to be unlawful.
The DA in Msunduzi is of the view that there are little prospects of success of overturning the judgement on appeal. What this really is about is attempting to hold off the DA’s motion of no confidence in the ANC mayor as the coalition of the ANC-PA-EFF-IFP is now uncertain of its support.
This is nothing short of a disgrace and yet another example of how this ANC-led coalition municipality wastes taxpayers’ money on endless legal battles instead of focusing on service delivery. Residents of Msunduzi are being denied proper governance while scarce public resources are poured into defending the indefensible.
Furthermore, this abuse of the court by the municipality and is against to MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi’s recent interventions in Msunduzi.
The DA will push for a hearing date to ensure this matter is brought to finality as swiftly as possible. The people of Msunduzi deserve better than a municipality that hides behind technicalities, wastes their money, and continues to put political interests ahead of residents’ needs.
The DA will continue to fight for accountability, transparency, and a municipality that works for its people.
