The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini has written to the Manager of Aquatic Safety, Zola Ndlovu, to request immediate clarity on the reasons behind the delay, as well as a clear timeline for the reopening of the Illovo public swimming pool in Ward 109.
Despite being fully prepared and ready for public use for over a month, the pool remains closed.
The pool was initially closed over two years ago due to a sewer spillage, which was resolved approximately a year ago. Since then, the facility underwent sanitation procedures and renovations, and it is now in a state deemed fit for public use. Despite this, access to the pool remains restricted, with no clear communication or justification provided by the eThekwini Municipality.
This delay is not only unacceptable but also highlights a growing pattern of poor service delivery and lack of transparency within the municipality. The prolonged inaccessibility of the facility deprives the surrounding community of a much-needed recreational space, particularly during peak seasonal demand.
The DA is calling for immediate clarity on the reasons behind the delay, as well as a clear timeline for the reopening of the pool. The community has waited long enough, and residents deserve access to public infrastructure that has been restored and prepared for use.
The DA will continue to pursue accountability on this issue and ensure that public facilities funded by taxpayers are made accessible to the people they are meant to serve.
