The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini has formally written to the Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, requesting that he urgently convene a special meeting of the Executive Committee (EXCO).

This request follows a recent Constitutional Court judgment ordering eThekwini municipality to pay R30 million plus interest to a contractor, in a dispute that has been in courts for over eight (8) years, as well as letters of demand submitted to the municipality by aggrieved parties in this case.

The DA believes that this matter is of such significance and urgency that it cannot wait until the next scheduled EXCO meeting. As Chairperson of EXCO, the Mayor is empowered to call a special meeting, and we urge him to do so without delay.

It is essential that a comprehensive report on the implications of the Constitutional Court judgment and the related correspondence be tabled and discussed. EXCO must urgently deliberate on the available options to ensure that the municipality responds appropriately, lawfully, and in the best interests of the residents of eThekwini.

The DA remains committed to accountability, transparency, and good governance, and we believe that swift action in this matter is not only prudent but necessary.
