The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Msunduzi has formally tabled a Motion of No Confidence (MONC ) in Mayor Mzi Thebolla, calling for his immediate removal from office following the KwaZulu-Natal High Court’s damning ruling on the R27 million Royal AM sponsorship deal.
The Court declared the deal unlawful, set aside the July 2023 Council decision that authorised it, and ordered that all funds paid to Royal AM be repaid to the municipality immediately.
Despite repeated objections from the DA and formal legal warnings, the deal was pushed through under Mayor Thebolla’s leadership and support — a clear dereliction of duty and a blatant disregard for governance, fiscal responsibility, and the law.
This conduct has:
– Wasted R27 million in public funds.
– Added significant legal costs for ratepayers.
– Stolen vital resources from urgently needed service delivery.
The DA is writing to, and engaging directly with, all opposition parties in the Msunduzi Council to unite behind this motion. This is not a partisan issue — it is about doing the right thing for the people of Msunduzi and restoring integrity to local government.
We further demand that once the recovered funds are returned, they be ring-fenced and immediately allocated to critical water infrastructure upgrades and water reticulation projects across the municipality, to directly address Msunduzi’s ongoing water crisis.
It is now time for all councillors who care about accountability, service delivery, and the wellbeing of our residents to stand together. Msunduzi deserves leadership that serves the people — not political vanity projects.
