The recent meeting between the KZN Department of Transport, stakeholders, and Councillors marked a pivotal moment for improving local infrastructure, particularly concerning the long-neglected uMzimkhulu bridge. The Department’s commitment to repair the bridge stems largely from the Democratic Alliance’s persistent advocacy, highlighting the urgent need for accountability within the transport sector.

A key point of discussion was the P464, proposed as an alternative route to Port Shepstone. The DA rejected this option due to its unsafe condition, prioritizing the safety of commuters and pedestrians. The DA believes there is only one safe option, that of using the N2 toll road and is advocating for the Minister of Transport to waiver toll fees for the Port Shepstone on and offramps only, during the repair period. A proactive step that seeks to ease the unfair financial strain on commuters while maintaining their safety.

While the DA welcomes the bridge repairs, we emphasise that safety cannot be compromised by relying on hazardous routes. The meeting showcased that the DA’s focus remains on solutions that prioritise community needs. This meeting represents a significant stride toward enhancing transport infrastructure in KZN and ensuring public safety during the project, whilst providing oversight and accountability at all levels.
