The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini is deeply disturbed by the recent forced eviction of flood victims from temporary accommodation facilities, an inexcusable humanitarian failure under the watch of the EFF-led Human Settlements Department.
The DA will write to the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, as well as the MEC of Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, to request their urgent intervention in this crisis.
The EFF, which oversees this crucial portfolio, has shown gross incompetence and a lack of compassion in its handling of the flood victims’ plight. Councillor Themba Mvubu, as the Chairperson of Human Settlements, must immediately account to the people of eThekwini and explain how vulnerable residents have once again been left without shelter, dignity, or support.
This disgraceful incident underscores what the DA has long warned against the ANC- led coalition with minority parties like the EFF, is nothing more than a political “stokvel” focused on positions and power sharing rather than service delivery. It is the residents of this city, especially the poor and displaced, who are paying the price.
We demand that this administration prioritise human dignity over political gamesmanship. The KZN Department of Public Works, led by the DA’s Martin Meyer, recently donated three buildings to eThekwini which can also be considered for accommodating flood victims.
eThekwini residents deserve leadership that works for them, not one that turns its back when they need it most.
