DA welcomes unveiling of monument honouring Indian Indentured Labourers of the KZN Midlands

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is elated to have had the unveiling of the monument honouring the Indian Indentured Labourers of the KZN Midlands in DA-run uMngeni Local Municipality this past Saturday.

The event that was hosted by the uMngeni Museum saw DA-run uMngeni Mayor Chris Pappas, Speaker Janis Holmes, KZN Legislature Deputy Speaker/Mooi-uMngeni Constituency Head, Mmabatho Tembe MPL, Ward Councillor Hazel Lake, and Consul General of India Dr. Thelma John David come together to unveil the monument.

They were joined by local community members, special guests and donors.

The project, led by the 1860 Legacy Foundation under the leadership of Dr. Isri Bedassi, seeks to preserve and celebrate the history and legacy of the Indian community in uMngeni.

This monument is open to the public and offers an important opportunity for locals, visitors, and especially young people to learn about the rich history of the area.

The DA led government is honored to have been a part of this significant milestone, where we got to celebrate the strength, courage and hard work of those that came before us who contributed to the building of our country that we get to live in today.
