The Democratic Alliance in Msunduzi municipality has called on the Mayor Mzi Thebolla to initiate remedial action in terms of alerting the Provincial Executive of the continued financial collapse and request the relevant intervention needed in terms of Treasury to mandatory execute a Financial Recovery Plan on behalf of the municipality.
This, as the 2024/25 mid-year performance review that was tabled yesterday during the special full council meeting, has painted a bleak picture regarding the municipality’s finances. The process has also been irregular since councillors were not given adequate time to facilitate their oversight responsibilities.
Despite being half-way through, service delivery and financial situations continue to deteriorate, with no signs of improvement. The lack of effective leadership and interest in addressing these issues has led to further urban decay.
The ANC-led administration cannot self-correct and therefore responsibility of managing the City’s finances must be taken away from those who are causing the collapse.
It is the responsibility of the mayor to take decisive action, execute his mandatory responsibilities, and initiate remedial action to address the financial crisis.
Notable concerns include:
– Cash coverage has not exceeded one month over the past five years
– Lack of prioritization in expenditure has led to catastrophic consequences
– Financial collapse requires immediate intervention from the Provincial Executive and Treasury
We are calling on the mayor to “fall on his sword” and make the necessary decisions to fix the city. Residents deserve better and the DA will continue to strive for a well-managed and prosperous city.
