The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the proactive engagements with MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa of the IFP, and her commitment to ensuring the eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the province.

The Department’s recent efforts to trace the spread of the disease, along with their renewed focus on containment and prevention, are positive steps in the right direction. The DA supports this commitment and will continue to monitor its implementation closely to ensure it delivers real results for affected farmers and communities.

We further call on the private sector, particularly veterinary and livestock industry experts, to step forward and support the Department’s action plan. Their expertise and resources can play a crucial role in strengthening the province’s overall response to this agricultural crisis.

As part of the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), the DA remains steadfast in its mission to strengthen governance, ensure accountability, and improve responses to crises that impact livelihoods and food security. We will continue to hold all members of the Executive accountable to ensure that promises are met with action and that the people of KwaZulu-Natal receive the support they deserve.
