The Democratic Alliance (DA) extends its appreciation to all involved in the successful repair of the collapsed N2 bridge – near Amanzimtoti – days ahead of schedule.

The closure of the bridge has caused massive frustration to road users and has had an economic impact for many.

The quick repair is testament to what can be achieved when government and communities work together towards achieving a common goal. This collaborative spirit between eThekwini, SANRAL, Metro Police, SAPS, councillors, residents and the media saw the bridge fixed days ahead of the proposed date.

Overcoming such a significant challenge requires not only technical expertise but also careful planning and dedication. SANRAL’s efforts have ensured the safety and continued mobility of those who use this road.

The DA appreciates the cooperation between all parties involved — engineers, construction teams, local authorities, and all supporting stakeholders. Their resilience and proactive approach in addressing this issue is commendable. Mention must also be made of local DA Councillors who have been on the ground, liaising with stakeholders and communicating updates to residents.

While this particular issue has had a happy ending, the reality is that there is an ongoing failure to properly maintain essential infrastructure across KZN.

From deteriorating roads and bridges to neglected public services, the lack of investment in maintenance is jeopardizing the safety and wellbeing of KZN’s people.

The DA believes that a proactive approach is urgently required – one that prioritizes regular upkeep, timely repairs, and modernization to meet the needs of our growing population.

More resources need to be allocated in order to maintain existing infrastructure, rather than solely focusing on new projects. Neglecting infrastructure maintenance leads to unnecessary costs, accidents, and ultimately, to delays in development.

The DA is committed to ensuring that KZN’s infrastructure works for its people.
