16 days of Activism: KZN still the rape and murder capital, more must be done!

The second quarter 2024/2025 crime statistics paint a grim picture of the crime situation in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), especially when it comes to the most vulnerable.

KZN continues to hold its spot as the “rape and murder capital” of the country, with the Inanda police station having recorded the most cases for rape as well as for murder during this period.

Across the country:

1 272 women and children were murdered

14 366 women were assaulted with intent to inflict Grievous Bodily Harm

1 944 children were assaulted with intent to inflict Grievous Bodily Harm

While we recognize and appreciate positive strides against crime, under the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), we believe that more still needs to be done to make our province safe.

We maintain our stance that it is going to take a ‘whole of society approach’, that would include quality and professional training for officers, specialized units and working relations between private and public role players.

Hosting events, to only discuss this scourge, for 16 days is not enough. We need year-round active involvement, plans and action to end this scourge.

Our women deserve to live in communities, where they can walk their streets freely, without the fear of being killed, assaulted or raped.

Our communities must speak out and unite in our fight against crime.
