This Womens Month the Democratic Alliance Womens Network (DAWN) in KwaZulu-Natal recognizes the many advancements made by our women in our society. Women have continued to contribute immensely to our society and within their local communities while overcoming many adversities.

Women in this province continue being the biggest victims of various forms of crimes both in public and private spaces. More recently is the gruesome and brazen killing by gun of a female teacher in the township of Ntuzuma in full view of pupils. This is why we see as vital the resumption of quarterly crime statistics announcements by the Police Minister after this was halted as the residents of KZN and country need to see the full extent to which crime affects women.

We also cannot ignore the lengths our brave women have gone to make a difference in the lives of many, including putting their own lives on the line, at times. Women have ascended beyond being caregivers and mothers but have now become the face of gallantry, virtue, dedication and resilience, to name a few.

It is now time for women to take up the journey of prosperity in different sectors and champion growth. It is time for Imbokodo to take up their rightful place as key players in all arenas of our society. While this is still not the case in some areas, we are pleased that in some the ushering is starting to take place.

This is why we are encouraged by sentiments by our Premier during his State of the Province Address yesterday where he denounced women still being the face of poverty while announcing bolstered support for women-owned businesses including a Women Advancement Fund within 100 days.

This Womens Month let us ensure we advance the prosperity of those who form the very foundation of our families and our communities. It is through a supported foundation that our society can thrive.
