The DA in eThekwini welcomes the arrest of an employee from the disaster management centre responsible for the monitoring of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. He was arrested late yesterday.

According to reports, he was arrested for allegedly sabotaging CCTV cameras for criminal benefit.

We have for years probed the non-functionality of the 499 CCTV cameras which is a very vital crime fighting resource in the city. Crime statistics in the city has increased ten fold with the eye in the sky gone blind.

The DA had on several occasions also raised the reluctance of Metro Police department to take over the monitoring of the CCTV cameras as promised by commissioner Mchunu last year.

We believe that competent experience law enforcement officers should be responsible for the monitoring of the CCTV cameras. To date the monitoring is still being done by disaster management centre.

Most of the city’s cameras were fixed last year after much pressure from the DA only to discover that an employee within the department was responsible for sabotage of the cameras.

The DA in eThekwini will continue to fight on behalf of residents and not stop until all corrupt officials are weeded out.
