DA distances itself from AbaQulusi Speaker comments

Issued by Councillor Swelakhe Shelembe – DA AbaQulusi Chief Whip

The DA in AbaQulusi local municipality distances itself from comments made by the Municipal Speaker, Councillor Micheal Khumalo regarding hiring processes in the municipality.

This follows a video that has been widely circulated on social media, where during a funeral service of late IFP Councillor Phaphama Mbatha, he alluded that he would speak to the Municipal Manager to hire one of Mbatha’s family members by firing and replacing any ANC affiliated municipal employee.

He then went on to say that DA Councillor Swelakhe Shelembe would support this move, this is not true we would never support this ludicrous move.

As the DA we advocate for fair and equal opportunities for all regardless of one’s political affiliation. It is for this reason that we are distancing ourselves from these comments.

This brings to question the IFP-run municipality’s employment processes.

The DA had in September written to the municipality to request the vetting of qualifications of all professional municipal employees (view letter here).

The DA remains as the party that believes and grounded in accountability, clean governance and transparency.
