New DSW waste collection trucks unveiling fails to go ahead due to squabble between Mavundla and Kaunda

The DA has written to the Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee, Deputy Mayor PG Mavundla, requesting reasons as to why the long awaited delivery and unveiling of the new DSW waste collection fleet – that was scheduled to take place yesterday – was abruptly canceled.

This, after Mavundla had invited all HSI councilors to the unveiling of what he called a huge step towards improving service delivery. At last minute, when we arrived at the venue, we were informed by Mavundla that the event was now canceled.

It is alleged that Mayor Kaunda wanted to be the one doing the unveiling of the new trucks instead of Mavundla.

If this is true, it is immature, insufficient and completely unacceptable that such an important event fails to go ahead due to competing political interests. This was an important undertaking that is much needed by the people of eThekwini and can’t be hijacked by politicians who want to use the event to grandstand and massage their egos at the expense of the ratepayers.

For years, the DA have played a pivotal role in putting pressure on the municipality to ensure that these waste trucks were eventually delivered. We are therefore very unhappy about what transpired and require answers to this mess.

It is clear that there is a great deal of incoherence between the ABC leader, Mavundla, and the ANC’s Kaunda. The relationship between the ANC and Mavundla’s block doesn’t seem to be pro service delivery but more about individual egos.

Our city can no longer afford to have another day without new waste collection fleet as the current one is old and have reached its lifespan.
