The Democratic Alliance Students Organization in KwaZulu-Natal strongly condemns the destruction of property and the disruption of classes amid ongoing protest at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville and Howard campuses.

This as disgruntled students took to the streets the past two days to protest against the suspension of 300 cleaning staff. The cleaning staff were suspended after they had submitted a memorandum to the university management with grievances regarding the working conditions.

Two students were reportedly shot at and rushed to the nearest hospital. The security guard hut was burnt down and two university vehicles were set alight.

Students have not been able to attend classes and even though the university had made the online teaching and learning programme available to students, not all students have the means to access these.

It is in this regard that we are calling on the involved students to take the matter up through the right channels and engage with the university management.
