The Democratic Alliance today calls on KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, to put all possible measures in place – including the necessary funding – to assist those communities severely affected by recent flooding.

The DA is devastated by the suffering experienced during the recent floods in our province. Many people have been displaced and – worse still – have lost their lives. We extend our sincere condolences to those who are grieving such tragic losses.

KZN’s Department of Social Development (DSD) has a crucial role to play, not only within communities but also in assisting NGOs. This must include;

• Assistance with the distribution of blankets to those whose homes are flooded

• The deployment of on-the-ground social workers to assist with urgent psycho-social support to families, particularly those who have lost loved ones;

• Additional funding for NGOs so that they are able to assist, particularly with the distribution of much-needed resources and;

• DSD and Disaster Management to compile an urgent list for SASSA so that food parcels can be distributed to homes severely affected

The DA will continue to assist communities on the ground. We stand firm with the many communities who are affected during this devastating time and remain committed to conducting oversight of this Department to ensure that it does everything that it can to help KZN’s people.
