The Democratic Alliance in King Cetshwayo District has written to the Municipal Manager, Mbali Ndlovu, to request an urgent investigation into the use of municipal resources to campaign by the ANC in the district.

This follows after a video has been widely circulated on social media where the ANC can be seen using a municipal vehicle for electioneering purposes.

The video clearly shows a group of people hurriedly taking off their ANC T-shirts after being confronted by a crowd of disgruntled residents. They throw the T-shirts into the vehicle before making a getaway amid the crowd jeering them.

The Democratic Alliance therefore demands that:

1. An investigation be conducted under the fleet to ascertain who had been issued the vehicle at the time it was campaigning;

2. If any Councillor was involved, a report on possible violation of the code of conduct for councillors be tabled at a special council meeting and;

3. In the case of Municipal official, the Municipal manager table a special report on the action to be taken against those who have transgressed the code of conduct.

The use of state resources to fund ANC campaigns is not a new phenomenon and is not only a violation of the separation of state and party, but comes at a massive expense to citizens who inadvertently fund the ANC campaign with their rates and taxes.

We will not leave this matter unchallenged and are calling for those that are responsible to be held accountable.
