The ANC Councillors in the uMngeni Municipality have once again neglected the needs of the community and allowed their in-fighting to get in the way of service delivery at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. This after the ANC Councillors were absent at a Council meeting due to factional in-fighting. It is alleged that the ANC Councillors were deliberately absent due to in-fighting between the Speaker and some Councillors within her caucus.

The crucial Council meeting scheduled for today, where the 4th quarter report was going to be tabled, had to be cancelled as it did not quorate due to the absence of ANC Councillors. There was not a single ANC Councillor present except the Speaker.

This is just the latest example of the dire state that the municipality is in due to the lack of political leadership and administrative competence. The municipality continues to collapse under the ANC leadership and residents are left to pick up the pieces. This is unfolding at a time when most South Africans cannot even put food on the table for their families and are looking to political leaders for hope.

The municipality faces a myriad of problems including an underqualified municipal manager who does not attend crucial meetings and a Speaker who is consistently trampling on the Constitution and municipal legislation.

The Speaker has continuously ignored calls from the Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillors to broadcast the Council meetings on social media so that the public can observe as per their Constitutional right and the standing rules of the Council.

This municipality is on the brink of collapse. The DA will be demanding that the MEC for Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sipho Hlomuka intervene as the residents bear the brunt for the infighting and incapacity of the ruling party.
