The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has today formally escalated allegations of the selling of teaching posts and possible “sex-for-jobs” practices within the province’s Department of Education (DoE) to the Hawks.
This follows the expiry of the DA’s seven-day deadline allowing the department to provide a full account of its investigation after disturbing videos surfaced in July.
That deadline has passed. There has been no satisfactory formal response to the DA’s queries. There is no investigation report, no clear indication of who conducted the investigation, and no explanation of whether disciplinary or criminal referrals have followed.
Behind this scandal are real people: qualified young teachers who deserve to know that employment is based on merit, not money, connections or sexual exploitation.
No teacher should ever have to pay with cash, or their body, to teach our children.
The DA will request that the Hawks independently establish whether corruption, fraud, abuse of office or organised post-selling may have occurred.
HOD, Ngcobo ordered the investigation. He must tell KZN’s people what became of it. MEC Hlomuka is the political head and must explain why weeks of silence have been allowed to follow.
