The DA, as a responsible member of the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), welcomes the renewal of the term of office for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Public Service Commissioner (PSC), Yasmin Essop Bacus. This is a decision that reinforces the values of accountability, ethical governance and effective oversight within the provincial public service.
Ms Bacus has distinguished herself as an independent and capable commissioner whose work has strengthened oversight institutions and contributed meaningfully to improving governance standards across the province.
Her office has consistently provided the KZN legislature and its oversight bodies with credible assessments, governance evaluations and accountability mechanisms that are essential to building public trust.
KZN’s GPU supported Ms Bacus reappointment because she has demonstrated that she remains fit, proper and fully capable of serving in this important constitutional office. Continuity in oversight institutions matters. Experience, integrity and institutional knowledge cannot simply be discarded for political convenience.
It is therefore deeply concerning that the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) chose to oppose this reappointment. Its position raises serious questions around commitment to transparent governance and independent oversight.
At a time when South Africans are demanding cleaner government and stronger accountability, the MKP has elected to stand against a respected public servant with a proven record.
