The Democratic Alliance is highly concerned by the fire that has once again broken out at the Pietermaritzburg landfill site this weekend which is presently still underway causing severe air pollution to neighboring residential areas.

The residents of Pietermaritzburg once again face the brunt of smoke pollution caused by repeated fire breakouts at the UMsunduzi landfill site due to gross mismanagement of the site.

The frequency of fire breakouts at the site has worsened over the last two years despite numerous attempts by DA local Councillors to get the municipality to reinstate the landfill site monitoring committee.

The DA will continue to work with local organizations to fight for the proper management of the landfill site, including the filling of key posts by competent officials.

The residents of Pietermaritzburg deserve clean air. The repeated health hazards posed by the air pollution emanating from the landfill site are unacceptable and as a matter of urgency must come to an end.
