The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) submitted 57% of all provincial legislature parliamentary questions between January and June 2026, demonstrating real commitment to accountability.
Parliamentary questions remain a highly effective oversight tool within the Legislature, with MECs compelled to provide answers, within a two-week period, on a wide range of issues affecting our province’s people.
Statistics for the number of written and oral parliamentary questions (view here ) submitted to KZN’s MECs and their departments for the period 1 January to 30 June show that:
• The DA’s eight caucus members who are not part of the executive, submitted a total of 129 questions – 57% of all questions while;
• KZN’s official opposition party, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s (MKP) 37 members, submitted 90 questions – 39.8% of all questions.
The DA, in other words, did 17.2% more work in this area on a per member basis. This, despite having a quarter of the number of members that the MKP does.
These statistics raise a serious question: What does the MKP do in the Legislature? Their fecklessness as KZN’s official opposition is repeatedly demonstrated and these statistics are further evidence of this.
The 2026 statistics to date should and must worry those who support the MKP. As KZN’s official opposition, it’s primary focus should be on accountability and oversight within government. Yet, it has fallen to the DA – a GPU partner – to uphold that role.
KZN’s GPU has shown, in just two years, that progress is possible. The DA remains committed to developing a capable, ethical and caring province for KZN’s people.
