The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the passing of the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) 2026/27 budget, tabled by Finance MEC, Francois Rodgers and his Treasury team.
Despite ongoing fiscal constraints, the budget represents a realistic and disciplined plan to strengthen frontline services, while placing KZN’s finances on a solid footing for the future.
The DA commends MEC Rodgers and Provincial Treasury for crafting a budget that balances limited resources with urgent service delivery needs.
Key allocations include:
• Education: R647million over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to address Compensation of Employee (CoE) pressures, equalise Grade R teacher pay, and expand the Teacher Assistants Programme;
• Health: R1.4billion to stabilise hospitals, clinics, and emergency services, ensuring clean procurement and improved patient care;
• Human Settlements: Additional allocations to strengthen housing delivery and informal settlement upgrades; and
• Infrastructure: R18.4billion for roads, bridges, and water systems, with tighter project management and fiscal controls.
These allocations are real-world focused, touching the lives of KZN’s citizens in classrooms, clinics, and communities across our province.
It is a budget rooted in realism, discipline, and ensuring that every rand delivers value for money. It is a budget which shows that the GPU is well on its way to turning KZN’s finances around, while ensuring sustainability and accountability.
