The DA strongly condemns the brutal and senseless killing of African Farmers’ Association of South Africa (AFASA) KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Chairperson, Mr Mbongeni Skhakhane, who was fatally shot yesterday morning at his place of business.

Mr Skhakhane’s murder is a devastating loss to his family, the AFASA fraternity and the broader agricultural sector. The DA in KZN extends its deepest condolences at this sad and difficult time.

A committed farmer and leader, Mr Skhakane dedicated his life to empowering emerging farmers, strengthening food security, and advancing rural development in KZN.

This heinous crime again exposes the growing vulnerability of farmers and farm workers. It is unacceptable that those who contribute to livelihoods, jobs and social cohesion continue to live and work under constant threat.

The DA calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to act with urgency and determination. A thorough investigation must now follow to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.

We reiterate our call for strengthened rural safety strategies, visible policing and intelligence-led operations to protect farmers and farm workers who are vital to food production and economic stability.

The DA stands in solidarity with the Skhakhane family, AFSA and KZN’s farming community. We remain committed to a capable, ethical and caring state and will continue to demand justice and accountability.
