DA raises alarm over governance collapse in uPhongolo as IFP divisions hand control to ANC

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal is deeply concerned by the latest developments in uPhongolo Municipality, which expose a complete breakdown in governance and political stability.

At today’s Council meeting to elect a new Speaker, only 6 out of 14 IFP councillors were present, while the ANC and other parties filled the gap. The Speaker was ultimately elected unopposed, with the nomination both proposed and seconded by the ANC.

This is not just a procedural issue, it is clear evidence that the IFP is deeply divided and unable to govern effectively, creating space for the ANC to assert control through opportunistic alliances.

The situation is further compounded by the continued involvement of Municipal Manager, Mr Khali, in presiding over Council processes following the highly controversial decision to lift his suspension. This raises serious concerns about the legitimacy and integrity of decision-making in the municipality.

The DA has consistently acted in good faith to support stable and accountable governance in uPhongolo. However, it is now evident that:

• The IFP is not acting as a coherent or reliable partner

• Critical decisions are being driven through IFP factions working with the ANC

• Governance processes are being undermined and politicised

The people of uPhongolo deserve better than a municipality driven by division, instability, and backroom arrangements.

As a result, the DA will be reviewing its position on cooperation in uPhongolo and will not allow itself to be associated with governance failures or irregular processes.

This development also sends a clear message across the Zululand District: Where the DA offers cooperation, it must be met with accountability, unity, and respect for the rule of law, not political convenience.

The DA remains committed to clean governance, transparency, and service delivery, and will continue to act decisively where these principles are undermined.
