The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ugu South welcomes progress made by the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, particularly the completion of the beachfront paving and the restoration of both the Olympic and children’s pools, which are now operational. These are positive steps toward revitalising the area.
This follows an extensive Let’s Fix Margate” campaign, by the DA, that has been engaging residents, businesses, and visitors in a petition to drive the full rehabilitation of the Margate beachfront, an area that remains a cornerstone of the South Coast’s tourism economy.
Following the severe flood damage in 2023 and the impact of years of infrastructure neglect, the DA’s campaign seeks to ensure that the Margate beachfront once again becomes a clean, safe, and attractive destination for both local and international visitors.
The DA extends sincere appreciation to Tidy Towns, the driving force behind maintaining cleanliness and pride in the beachfront and surrounding areas. Their ongoing voluntary work, supported by the local business community, demonstrates the power of active citizenship and community partnership. The pathways, railings, buildings, and public toilet facilities continue to require urgent attention to meet the standards expected of a major tourist hub.
The DA urges the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to work hand in hand with Tidy Towns, local businesses, and residents to complete the outstanding upgrades. A clean, well-maintained beachfront is not just an asset to Margate, but a vital contributor to the local economy, job creation, and tourism recovery along the KZN South Coast.
With continued cooperation from all stakeholders, we can ensure that Margate Beach once again becomes the destination of choice, a proud reflection of what effective partnerships between community, business, and government can achieve.
