DA demands action over waste management crisis in Mtubatuba

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mtubatuba has written to the Municipal Manager, Thami Xulu , to request his urgent intervention amid worsening waste management crisis.

This is deeply concerned about the ongoing waste management crisis affecting residents in several communities, particularly in Ward 5, Ndlovu Village.

This follows the DA’s oversight inspection in Ward 5, Ndlovu Village. This oversight has revealed that there are areas where waste is not being collected regularly, if at all. In some parts, there are no skip bins available for proper disposal, forcing residents to live among heaps of uncollected rubbish. This situation is not only unacceptable but poses serious health and environmental risks to our communities.

In response to these concerns, the DA has requested the following information from the Municipal Manager:

• The waste collection schedule for Ward 5 Ndlovu village

• The number of EPWP workers currently employed to handle waste management in this area.

• The number and condition of skip bins available in the ward.

• the state of the waste collection truck allocated to this area.

Waste collection is a basic municipal function and a constitutional obligation. Residents deserve clean, safe, and dignified communities. The continued neglect by the municipality shows a lack of planning and accountability in service delivery.

The DA will continue to monitor this matter closely and ensure that the municipality provides clear answers and takes immediate corrective action. Should there be no improvement, we will escalate this matter to the relevant oversight bodies to ensure that the rights of residents are protected.

We call on the municipality to act urgently to restore proper waste collection services, provide adequate infrastructure such as skip bins, and ensure that all equipment and personnel are deployed effectively.

The DA remains committed to fighting for clean, accountable, and effective governance in Mtubatuba.
