The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has reliably learnt that a constable stationed at the Pinetown SAPS police station has accepted the position of REC Member eThekwini Region ANCYL.

The DA has also seen social media posts of the constable wearing party regalia.

The DA has therefore written to the Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Mkhwanazi,to request that this matter is investigated, and if found to be true for action to be taken against the member.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Act 68 of 1995 (also known as the South African Police Service Act, 1995) prohibits SAPS members from engaging in political activities, including participating in political parties or elections. It is for this reason that the DA have called for the investigation.

Police officers are trained and taught about rules and laws, including the ban on being involved in politics.

As a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS), she is expected to maintain neutrality and impartiality in her duties.

If found to have broken the law; the DA believes that she must be released from her duties so that she can focus on her political career.

She needs to step down from her role as a police officer to maintain the integrity and neutrality of the SAPS.
