The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality has written to the Harry Gwala District Mayor, Councillor Zamokwakhe Nxumalo to request urgent intervention as communities in parts of Ubuhlebezwe reach seven (7) months without water.
Residents of Estolo Esimnyama, Etsheni Lenduna, Maygqigqa, and surrounding areas have been without reliable water supply since August 2024.
Not only does this violate the constitutional rights of residents but also shows the lack of care from the ANC-led municipality and the district’s failure to prioritise basic service delivery.
The DA calls for:
• Immediate intervention from Harry Gwala District and KZN CoGTA department.
• Commitment from Harry Gwala District on the timelines to restore water.
• A full audit into water infrastructure budgets and diesel procurement.
• A public explanation from the municipality on why this crisis has persisted seven months (7) months.
To date:
– Only one (1) out of six (6) reservoirs is functional.
– The municipality blames diesel shortages, yet no emergency measures have been implemented.
– No communication from officials, leaving communities in the dark.
The ANC’s silence confirms their disregard for struggling communities.
Water is a constitutional right, not a privilege. The ANC’s failure in Ubuhlebezwe is a disgrace. The DA will fight until there is water in every tap.
