Issued by Councillor Leon Garbade – DA Ray Nkonyeni Chairperson

The Democratic Alliance (DA) strongly condemns the ongoing strike in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and the continued lack of political intervention at all levels of government.

This strike that has now taken over three months, has disrupted essential municipal services, has severely impacted the local community, leaving residents without access to basic services.

The DA is deeply concerned about the apparent indifference and failure of local, provincial, and national government officials to address the root causes of the strike and engage in meaningful dialogue with the workers. This inaction only exacerbates the frustration of the workers and leaves residents to bear the brunt of the service delivery breakdown. It is unacceptable that political leaders have not shown the necessary urgency to intervene and resolve the crisis.

The DA calls for immediate political action to address both the workers’ concerns and the deteriorating state of service delivery in the municipality. It is crucial for government officials to prioritise the needs of the people and ensure that workers are treated fairly while simultaneously safeguarding the quality of services that communities rely on.

To this end, the DA calls for the immediate resignation of the municipal manager for their lack of intervention and complicit inaction. Further to this the DA in Ray Nkonyeni will submit an official motion of no confidence against the Mayor and calls on all political parties to put the residents of Ray Nkonyeni at the centre of all decision making.

Intervention by the KZN MEC for CoGTA has seemingly been fruitless, the DA will therefore be exploring further provincial intervention.

The DA remains committed to holding all levels of government accountable for their failure to address this critical issue. We will not be bystanders, whilst our town is burning!
