The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza have today submitted a motion of no confidence in the Speaker of Council, Councillor Govidammal “Dolly” Govender, due to her inability to conduct the business of council in an impartial manner (view motion here).

Despite our ongoing efforts to engage the Honorable Speaker on the suspension of KwaDukuza Mayor, Lindile Nhaca, which has been ventilated extensively in the public domain, we note the overwhelming resistance of the Speaker and Municipal Manager to take the council into confidence.

Our efforts to request a sitting of Special Council and clarification on the chairing of Mayoral Imbizos have both been vehemently ignored by Speaker of Council, Councillor Govender and Municipal Manager, Nhlanhla Mdakane. The speaker’s role in a municipality is key to ensuring oversight, accountability, integrity and the effective running of council meetings. The speaker must distinguish between her activities as a politician and her functions as a speaker.

In the KwaDukuza Council, both the Speaker and Municipal Manager have blurred the non-partisan functions of their respective roles and continue to operate as political puppets.

This motion will set a trajectory for the removal of the ANC in the KwaDukuza council, who continue to govern with arrogance through their illicit alliances. The people of KwaDukuza deserve better than a political party that continues to plunder public funds through deployment and patronage networks.

We call on all opposition parties in the KwaDukuza council to vote with their conscience and dismantle the ANC.
