The DA in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of four young learners from Groenvlei Combined School near Amajuba in Northern KZN.

The learners, aged between 14 and 16 years, were part of a group of 30 commuters returning from a wedding ceremony during the early hours of this morning when their vehicle was involved in an accident. Eleven others were reportedly hospitalised due to their injuries.

The DA extends its sincere condolences to the families of those who have passed away at such a tender age. We also wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.

KZN’s roads continue to claim far too many lives. It is imperative that KZN Education MEC, Mbali Frazer, establish the reasons for this horrific incident. This requires a full commitment to working with her Transport counterpart to ensure a swift and comprehensive investigation.

The MEC must also arrange psycho-social support for those who may require it and ensure that post mortems are expedited. The suffering of those close to the deceased cannot be prolonged in any manner.

The DA is committed to ensuring that the bereaved families get the answers they deserve.
