The DA in Amajuba District conveys our condolences to the family of the person who passed away following a head-on collision with an Amajuba District Municipality vehicle over the weekend, while a second person was seriously injured.

We have been reliably informed that the driver of the municipal vehicle that caused this unfortunate accident was able to escape the scene of the accident and is yet to be questioned about what happened. The actions of this driver, while they require a full investigation by both the Police and the municipality, must be condemned and are certainly suggestive of foul play.

This is the second accident involving vehicles of the district municipality in a very short period with just another vehicle also involved in an accident last Friday.

We are hopeful that the family of the deceased will lean on faith and strength during this difficult time.

Municipal vehicles are not the toys or personal vehicles of officials or politicians to use as they want. There have to be proper systems in place to monitor the use of these vehicles including the expenditure on fuel.

The DA has requested a full investigation from the municipal council into both incidents of the alleged misuse of state vehicles and we will follow up with SAPS to enquire about their progress in the matter against the driver who fled the scene of the accident.

We are committed to being the most effective opposition in KZN and remain at the forefront of proper oversight.
