The DA in eThekwini is disappointed by the predictable outcome of today’s full council meeting, that saw the ANC retain the mayor position and new NFP Deputy Mayor, giving rise to a disastrous ANC-EFF Coalition.

The NFP’s Councillor Zandile Myeni was today voted in as the new Deputy Mayor, following the ousting of ABC’s Councillor Philani Mavundla. We had in December voted against the ousting of Mavundla to prevent a possible EFF-ANC coalition.

This disastrous ANC-EFF coalition supported by other small parties, could mark the end of eThekwini.

The entire country has witnessed this ANC-run municipality allow catastrophic infrastructure failures, culminating in the contamination of our seas, rivers, and streets. Including the recent Auditor General’s report, which revealed the municipality’s terrible performance and R1, 5 billion in irregular expenditure.

The EFF has once again proven that they do not care about residents, but rather assuming power and lining their own pockets. The DA maintains that a vote for a smaller party is a vote for the ANC, which is what we have witnessed today in eThekwini.

These parties have shown a total disregard of the plight of residents that continue to be led by corrupt ANC leaders and officials, depriving residents of basic services.

The DA is the only party big enough, with a proven track record of good governance that can turn eThekwini around by delivering reliable services and putting the interests of residents first.
