The DA in uMkhanyakude today calls on the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Sihle Zikalala to launch an urgent investigation against Jozini Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Mfananaye Mathe following allegations of misuse of municipal funds.
This was exposed by an ANC councillor during a radio interview with the Mayor, that was shared on social media. It is alleged that the municipality spent R1.5 million on a rally and also bought new cars for the Mayor and Speaker without council approval.
He has also been accused of interfering with tender processes. The Mayor denied all the allegations and the ANC councillor did not have proof of these allegations.
We are calling on an urgent investigation on the matter to ascertain if these allegations have any substance. While residents of this municipality are unable to get the most basic services, people they entrusted with their votes use municipal funds for their own gain.
The DA in uMkhanyakude will follow up and monitor this matter to ensure that if there was wrongdoing, those implicated are brought to book.
