The Democratic Alliance in eThekwini is disgusted that Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has come out in support of the violent protest to free imprisoned Jacob Zuma. In a Facebook post, Kaunda has posted that “Msholozi is us” with hashtag #FreeZuma.  See here

The protests against Zuma’s incarceration have rocked eThekwini, rendering business and travel routes completely chaotic.

There has also been extensive damage that will require funds budgeted for service delivery to be redirected to repair infrastructure. It is unthinkable that the Mayor is figuratively and literally adding fuel to the fire in his very own city.

Kaunda has proven himself a hopeless political chameleon, desperately pandering to those who he believes will get him re-elected in the next election. He has proven by his actions that he is happy to see the city that he leads burn to the ground just to secure his own future.

eThekwini needs a strong and principled leader who can put their foot down and defend their constituents. Kaunda is the direct opposite- a weak and compromised man who can only sing to the tune of whoever he believes is in power in the ANC.

The DA commends the eThekwini Metro Police and Disaster Management for working to restore law and order despite the ramblings of their unhinged boss. We need to support them in their efforts to brings these criminals to book.

It is evident that Kaunda does not serve the residents of eThekwini but only himself. The DA therefore will consider its options in how to hold him accountable through the rules and processes of council.
