Issued by Maliyakhe Shelembe MP – DA UThukela Constituency Head

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Alfred Duma local municipality has submitted a motion of no confidence in the Mayor, Cllr Vincent Madlala.

This follows an allegation of corruption and maladministration against Cllr Madlala who has since taken sick leave for two months.

While we welcome his absence that will ensure that he doesn’t interfere with the investigation, we are concerned about the conditions of his leave. His application for sick leave should have been presented before the Council. We have requested a doctor’s medical certificate to prove that he is really unwell and not fit to continue with his duties.

If his illness can not be confirmed, it will mean that taxpayers are funding the Mayor to receive a full salary and benefits while sitting at home.

Strike action in this municipality continued for more than two weeks, closing schools, businesses, hospitals and roads, and it took the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Sihle Zikalala, too long to intervene.

While we condemn the destruction of municipal infrastructure, we stand in solidarity with residents who want the mayor to be fired due to poor service delivery. The municipality continues to fail to provide even the most basic of services under his leadership.

It is not just Mayor Madlala who is corrupt and does not care about the people, it is the whole ANC.

It has lost touch with the people and does not deserve to be in power. It is time for the Mayor of Alfred Duma to go.
