The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the MEC of COGTA, Sipho Hlomuka to institute a forensic investigation into alleged maladministration, fraud and corruption at AbaQulusi municipality, by evoking Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act.

This follows the arrest of the municipality’s Creditors Administrator who stole R3.9 million at the end of last year. The Administrator, Ms Khumalo, was charged and released on R30 000 bail.

The DA firmly believes that although Ms Khumalo had been charged, the matter can not be left there. A proper forensic investigation is required to ascertain if any other maladministration, fraud and corruption is taking place and to ensure that it is immediately stopped and dealt with.

Our call to the MEC to institute the investigation comes after a similar call at an Executive Committee (Exco) meeting on Tuesday 4 February, was shut down by the municipality’s administrator.

We believe that this matter is urgent, and we will pursue a forensic investigation, no matter what it takes.
