The DA in the Midlands Constituency condemns the removal of our election posters in Ward 40, Msunduzi, and will open a criminal case with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
This incident comes just days after the Electoral Code of Conduct signing ceremony at City Hall. Signing the Code must be more than a photo opportunity. It must be a commitment to political tolerance, lawful campaigning and respect for voters’ right to choose.
The Local Government: Municipal Electoral Act prohibits the defacing or unlawful removal of election posters. No individual or political organisation is above the law.
The DA calls on SAPS to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. We also call on all contesting parties and independent candidates to condemn interference with campaign materials and ensure that their supporters respect the rules.
Elections must be won through ideas, credible plans and the confidence of voters.
Tearing down posters does nothing to address the challenges facing Msunduzi residents.
The DA will continue taking our message of accountable government and better service delivery to every community as we work to get Msunduzi working for all.
