You cannot fight crime with a Metro Police department where jobs are allegedly sold to the highest bidder. The reported findings of a forensic investigation into alleged corruption within the eThekwini Metro Police are deeply disturbing and must not be swept under the carpet.
According to allegations contained in a confidential forensic report compiled by independent forensic accountants, Isiqu Forensic Accountants, senior eThekwini officials and law-enforcement personnel were allegedly linked to a scheme in which Metro Police jobs were sold to members of the public.
The report, which was reportedly submitted to the City’s Municipal Manager on 29 June 2026, allegedly details payments ranging from R5 000 to R50 000, with approximately R20 million allegedly paid in connection with the sale of Metro Police positions between 2025 and 2026.
These are extremely serious allegations.
As the DA we are calling for suspensions and dismissal for anyone found to have abused their position.
What makes this matter even more alarming is what it says about the state of law enforcement in our city.
A Metro Police officer should be appointed because they are capable, honest and committed to protecting the public, not because someone can allegedly pay thousands of rands for a uniform and a job.
Durban residents already have concerns about corruption within law enforcement, including the longstanding perception that “cool drink money” can make a fine disappear.
That is not law enforcement. That is the commercialisation of public power.
The people of eThekwini deserve to know what happened, who was involved, how the alleged scheme operated, and whether anyone in a position of authority ignored, facilitated or benefited from it.
No applicant should ever be made to believe that employment can be secured by paying money to an official or intermediary.
A DA run eThekwini will work to rebuild Metro Police into a professional, disciplined and corruption-free service that residents can trust.
We need officers who are visible in communities, tough on crime, fair in enforcing by-laws and accountable to the people they serve.
We also need recruitment systems that are transparent, merit-based and independently monitored, with strong protection for whistle-blowers who expose corruption.
The City cannot ask residents to obey the law while allegations of corruption are allowed to fester within the very department tasked with enforcing it.
The DA will continue to expose corruption, demand accountability and fight to restore the integrity of eThekwini’s law-enforcement institutions.
