The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Msunduzi today calls on the Municipality and the South African Police Services (SAPS) to press charges and investigate perpetrators involved in the Bombay heights illegal protest over electricity dispute.

The recent week-long protest action, which resulted in destruction and terrorizing of communities, is completely unacceptable. As the DA, we unequivocally condemn this protest action.

The transformer policy clearly outlines that transformers will not be replaced unless meter audits are conducted, and tampered meters will only be replaced upon submission of an amnesty form or after disconnection. Demands for electricity restoration in non-compliant cases are unwarranted.

The apparent lack of political will to address substandard living conditions underscores the government’s inability to meet the needs of its citizens.

It is imperative that political leaders take responsibility for their actions that destabilize communities. The provision of alcohol and threats to those who refuse to participate in protests are reprehensible. Moreover, the lack of law enforcement to address ongoing land invasions exacerbates the chaos.

Ultimately, communities are terrorized, lawlessness ensues, infrastructure is damaged, and education and livelihoods are disrupted. The failure of government to protect its citizens is unacceptable.
