The Democratic Alliance (DA) in uMkhanyakude congratulates the Class of 2025, educators, school leadership, parents and KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education officials on the district’s outstanding 93.6% matric pass rate, ranking it second best in South Africa.
This builds on last year’s achievement when uMkhanyakude led KwaZulu-Natal with a 92.8% pass rate and placed third nationally. The district has not only sustained excellence but improved on it – confirming that this success is systemic, not accidental.
In January 2025, the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature noted the district’s remarkable turnaround:
Not so long ago, this district was number 75 out of 75 districts in the country. Today it is number three in the entire country, and it is also number one in the province.
This year, uMkhanyakude has gone even further.
These results belong first to the learners, many of whom succeeded under difficult circumstances. They also reflect the dedication of educators and principals, improved district leadership and oversight and the support of parents and communities.
The turnaround has been driven by better accountability, focused learner support, improved exam preparation, and a growing culture of high expectations. It proves that rural districts can achieve excellence when systems work.
While we celebrate, the focus must now shift to improving quality passes, subject distinctions, and post-school opportunities. The DA remains committed to advocating for better infrastructure, strong leadership, and learner-centred education.
uMkhanyakude’s success shows what is possible when commitment meets accountability.
