The DA in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) commends the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) for its strong festive-season road-safety readiness, demonstrated during recent operations on the border between Kokstad and the Eastern Cape.

The deployment of smart roadblocks, high-visibility patrols and intensified enforcement efforts sends a clear message that road safety must remain a top priority as thousands of holiday-makers make their way to our province.

As the festive season begins, the DA – as a partner within KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) – calls on holiday travellers, residents, and visitors to obey the rules of the road. This includes;

–        Ensuring vehicles are fully compliant with the law before travelling

–        Displaying of valid vehicle licence discs

–        Ensuring up-to-date driving licences and;

–        Number plates that are compliant with KZN’s updated alphanumeric plate system.

Vehicle roadworthiness including brakes, tyres, lights, wipers and other safety components must also be checked, particularly with increased traffic volumes and unpredictable summer weather. Speed limits, seatbelt use and sober driving are non-negotiable. Reckless or distracted driving not only endangers individuals but threatens the safety of every person using our roads.

Recent comments by certain senior ANC eThekwini councillors – openly encouraged the relaxation and even the suspension of national laws and municipal by-laws during the festive season, remain a significant concern.  Such irresponsible statements undermine enforcement efforts aimed at saving lives and send a dangerous signal that lawlessness is acceptable in the name of entertainment.

Road safety requires partnership: strong enforcement from RTI and responsible behaviour from all road users. With commitment and respect for the rule of law, we can ensure a festive season marked not by tragedy, but by safe travel, peace, and shared enjoyment across KZN.
